South Korean author Han Kang has been awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in Literature. The Nobel Committee lauded her for her “poetic prose,” which not only addresses historical tragedies but also unveils the fragility of human existence.
Han Kang, born in 1970 in Gwangju, South Korea, relocated to Seoul with her family at the age of nine. Coming from a literary family, with her father being a well-known novelist, Han’s path in writing was shaped early on.
She embarked on her literary journey in poetry in 1993 and transitioned to prose with her debut short story collection, “Love of Yeosu,” released in 1995. However, it was her acclaimed novel “The Vegetarian,” published in 2007, that catapulted her to international fame. The narrative intricately explores the protagonist’s rejection of conventional dietary practices and the ensuing violent repercussions.
Throughout her body of work, Han Kang poignantly articulates themes of both physical and psychological suffering, presenting the transitory nature of life with remarkable insight. Her recognition as a Nobel laureate underscores her profound impact on the global literary landscape, solidifying her status as a pivotal figure in contemporary literature.
