Hezbollah Announces Burial Date for Martyr Leader Hassan Nasrallah on February 23
Hezbollah has officially announced that its former leader, Hassan Nasrallah, will be buried on February 23, 2025, nearly five months after he was Martyr in an Israeli airstrike in Beirut on September 27, 2024. Alongside him, senior Hezbollah commander Hashem Safieddine, who was assassinated in a separate strike on October 3, 2024, will also be laid to rest.
The burial had initially been scheduled to take place after a 60-day ceasefire that ended on January 26, 2025. However, the delay in the Israeli Defense Forces’ (IDF) withdrawal pushed the timeline back to February 18, with the final burial date now confirmed for February 23.
In a pre-recorded speech, Hezbollah’s new leader, Naim Qassem, condemned what he described as Israel’s repeated violations of the ceasefire agreement. He urged the Lebanese government to pressure international mediators into ensuring Israel fully adheres to its commitments. While acknowledging that Hezbollah did not achieve an “absolute victory”, Qassem emphasized the group’s resilience and ability to withstand Israeli military actions.
Qassem also praised the return of displaced residents to southern Lebanon, describing it as a “popular liberation.” His speech echoed Hezbollah’s long-standing narrative of resistance against Israeli forces.
Nasrallah’s Legacy and Regional Impact
Hassan Nasrallah led Hezbollah for over three decades, becoming one of the most influential figures in Middle Eastern politics. His leadership shaped Hezbollah into a powerful military and political force. His death marked a significant turning point in the region’s power dynamics.
His would-be successor, Hashem Safieddine, was also a key strategist within Hezbollah, making his assassination another major blow to the group.
The upcoming funeral is expected to be a high-profile event, drawing attention from Hezbollah supporters and regional allies as the organization moves forward under Naim Qassem’s leadership.
