Beirut – Hezbollah’s deputy leader Naim Qassem has called on Saudi Arabia to turn a “new page” with the Iran-backed movement, urging Riyadh to prioritize a common front against Israel despite years of hostility and political rifts.
In a televised address on Friday, Qassem proposed “mending relations” between Hezbollah and Saudi Arabia, framing the move as essential for confronting what he described as the region’s true threat — Israel.
Saudi Arabia and its Gulf allies designated Hezbollah a terrorist organization in 2016, citing its role in destabilizing the region. Relations between Riyadh and Lebanon soured further as Hezbollah deepened its influence within Lebanese politics and aligned closely with Iran.
Over the past year, Saudi Arabia has joined the United States and Hezbollah’s political rivals in pressuring Beirut to curb the group’s military capabilities, especially after Hezbollah’s heavy losses in last year’s war with Israel.
Naim Qassem insisted that Hezbollah’s arsenal is aimed solely at Israel, not at Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, or any other state.
“We assure you that the arms of the resistance are pointed at the Israeli enemy, not Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, or any other country in the world.”
He argued that dialogue could temporarily set aside past disputes and pave the way for regional cooperation:
“Dialogue will freeze the disagreements of the past, at least in this exceptional phase, so that we can confront Israel and curb it. Pressuring Hezbollah is a net gain for Israel,” Qassem added.
