Yemen’s Houthi movement has issued a stark warning to the United States, declaring it will target U.S. ships and warships in the Red Sea if Washington takes part in Israeli military operations against Iran.
In a video statement released Saturday, Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree warned that any U.S. involvement in Israeli aggression against Iran would provoke a military response from the group. “If the United States engages in an attack against Iran in cooperation with the Israeli enemy, our armed forces will strike its ships and warships in the Red Sea,” Saree declared.
The statement signals a potential escalation in maritime threats in one of the world’s most critical shipping lanes
The Red Sea serves as a vital maritime route for global trade and energy transport. Threats to its security—especially involving state-backed armed groups—could disrupt international shipping, raise oil prices, and heighten global tensions. The Houthis, who control significant territory in Yemen and are backed by Iran, have previously launched missile and drone attacks targeting vessels and military assets in the region.
The warning from the Houthis follows Israel’s airstrikes on Iranian military and nuclear facilities earlier this month, triggering an expanding conflict between the two regional powers. Iran has responded with multiple retaliatory strikes, while the U.S. faces mounting pressure over its stance and potential involvement.
Washington has yet to issue an official response to the Houthi threat, but the statement adds to the growing complexity of the Middle East crisis, now involving state and non-state actors across multiple theaters.
