Hungary Proposes Constitutional Changes Targeting LGBTQ Rights and Dual Citizens
Hungary’s ruling Fidesz party has introduced constitutional amendments that could restrict LGBTQ rights, prohibit Pride marches, and allow the expulsion of dual citizens deemed a threat to national sovereignty.
The proposed changes, submitted on Tuesday, would enshrine in the constitution that Hungary recognizes only two sexes: male and female. Additionally, a new provision prioritizes children’s physical, mental, and moral development, which could be used to justify banning Pride events under claims of protecting minors.
Another amendment grants the government the power to revoke citizenship from Hungarians holding dual nationality if their actions are considered a threat to sovereignty, public order, or national security.
The proposals come amid Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s increasing crackdown on LGBTQ rights, media independence, and foreign influence, especially following U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to pause USAID funding to Hungary.
With elections approaching in 2026, Orbán’s government is doubling down on nationalist policies while facing economic challenges and growing opposition. The proposed amendments also include a constitutional right to cash payments, an idea backed by Hungary’s far right due to distrust in banks.
If passed, these amendments would mark another shift toward conservative governance, further tightening restrictions on civil liberties in Hungary.
