VIENNA — The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has confirmed that the US airstrikes on Iran’s Isfahan nuclear complex resulted in minimal radioactive risk, as the targeted buildings either contained no nuclear material or only small amounts of low-enriched uranium.
In a statement issued Sunday, the UN nuclear watchdog clarified that six buildings were hit during the latest strikes, while four others had been previously damaged in earlier attacks.
Among the affected structures was a fuel rod production facility, the IAEA said, adding that no significant release of radioactive material had been detected.
“The facilities targeted today either contained no nuclear material or small quantities of natural or low-enriched uranium, meaning any radioactive contamination is limited to the buildings that were damaged or destroyed,” the agency confirmed.
According to Reuters, the IAEA emphasized that any potential radioactive contamination is localized within the impacted buildings, and does not pose a broader environmental threat.
The IAEA reiterated its commitment to continue monitoring the situation and ensuring transparency around nuclear safety in Iran amid escalating tensions following US and Israeli military actions.
