The impeachment motion against South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol failed on Saturday as members of his party boycotted the parliamentary vote.
The impeachment required the support of at least 200 out of 300 lawmakers to pass. However, more than 100 members of President Yoon’s party walked out before the vote, leaving the opposition short of the necessary numbers.
This development follows a controversial decision by President Yoon to impose martial law earlier this week, a measure he rescinded just six hours later after failing to gain parliamentary approval.
Tensions were high during the proceedings, with opposition members shouting anti-government slogans and accusing the president of authoritarian tendencies. Meanwhile, Yoon’s supporters gathered outside the parliament, labeling the opposition’s efforts as reckless and unnecessary.
A subsequent vote on the matter is scheduled for Wednesday, December 11, as the political standoff continues.
