India Begins Building AI-Driven Patrol Vessel to Boost Naval Defense

New Delhi — India has officially launched construction of its first Artificial Intelligence (AI)-equipped patrol vessel, designed to enhance maritime surveillance and response across the nation’s vast Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

The advanced ship, known as the Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel (NGOPV), is being built to counter evolving security threats and ensure rapid deployment in high-risk and strategically important waters.

The NGOPV will stretch 117 meters (384 feet) in length, with a displacement of approximately 2,700 tons. It will be manned by up to 121 personnel and designed for multi-role operations including anti-piracy missions, search and rescue, and surveillance.

Powered for performance, the patrol vessel will reach a top speed of 23 knots (43 km/h or 26 mph) and boasts an impressive range of 5,000 nautical miles (9,260 kilometers or 5,754 miles), allowing for long-duration missions without refueling.

What sets this vessel apart is its integration of AI-driven technologies, enabling real-time data analysis, automated threat detection, predictive navigation, and intelligent mission planning. These features will significantly reduce human error, improve situational awareness, and boost decision-making speed during complex maritime operations.

Naval experts highlight that the AI capabilities are expected to transform routine patrols into proactive security missions, allowing the Indian Navy to respond swiftly to emerging threats in its surrounding waters and beyond.

India’s move comes at a time of increasing maritime tension in the Indo-Pacific region. The introduction of AI in naval operations reflects the country’s commitment to strengthening its maritime domain awareness (MDA) and securing critical sea lanes used for international trade and defense logistics.

This initiative is also aligned with India’s broader goal to become a technologically self-reliant maritime power under the government’s “Make in India” and “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” (self-reliant India) campaigns.
