India Elections: AAP Defeated After 10 Years, BJP Wins Capital After 26 Years
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has defeated the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the Delhi state elections, securing a historic victory after 26 years.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the win as a “victory of development and good governance,” while former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal accepted defeat and congratulated the BJP.
BJP’s Historic Comeback in Delhi
For the first time since 1998, the BJP has won the Delhi elections, marking a major political achievement for the party.
According to the Election Commission:
- BJP has secured a two-thirds majority in the 70-seat assembly.
- Arvind Kejriwal lost his own seat, ending AAP’s decade-long rule in Delhi.
Statements from Modi and Amit Shah
Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated:
“We will improve the lives of Delhi’s residents.”
Home Minister Amit Shah called the victory a testament to the public’s trust in Modi’s leadership, emphasizing that the people of Delhi have chosen BJP decisively.
Arvind Kejriwal and AAP’s Struggles
Arvind Kejriwal, who rose to power in 2013 through an anti-corruption movement, has faced serious allegations of corruption in recent years. He was jailed for several months over claims of receiving financial benefits in the liquor license scheme, a charge he dismissed as political revenge by the Modi government.
BJP Supporters Celebrate Victory
BJP workers gathered outside the party headquarters on Saturday to celebrate the victory, while vote counting continues.
