India has successfully conducted a test of its long-range hypersonic missile, marking a major step forward in the country’s defense capabilities. The missile was launched from APJ Abdul Kalam Island, off India’s eastern coast, on Saturday, with Defense Minister Rajnath Singh announcing the success on Sunday.
Hypersonic missiles, which travel at speeds over five times the speed of sound, are an advanced class of weaponry. Only a few countries—namely the United States, China, and Russia—have demonstrated the ability to develop such technologies, while North Korea and the Houthis in Yemen have also claimed similar capabilities.
Singh hailed the test as a historic achievement, noting on social media, “This significant milestone places India in the select group of nations with the capability to develop such advanced military technologies.”
The missile, developed by India’s Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) in collaboration with industry partners, is designed to carry payloads over distances exceeding 1,500 kilometers. Government sources reported that the test flight confirmed successful terminal maneuvers, with a high degree of accuracy in its impact.
This success further strengthens India’s defense profile, coming as the country deepens military ties with Western nations, particularly through the Quad alliance with the United States, Japan, and Australia.
