The Indian Supreme Court has reversed the Allahabad High Court’s ban on madrassas in Uttar Pradesh, allowing approximately 25,000 institutions to resume operations. The ruling reinstates madrassas throughout the state, where around 2.7 million students are currently enrolled.
Earlier this year, in March, the Allahabad High Court deemed the Madrassa Act unconstitutional, arguing that it conflicted with India’s secular principles. The High Court had ordered the transfer of madrassa students to conventional schools, a decision that faced significant opposition from educational and religious groups.
With this latest ruling, the Supreme Court has restored the option for religious education to millions of students in Uttar Pradesh, emphasizing the importance of upholding diverse educational opportunities within the country’s secular framework.
