Indonesia officially Announced as a Full Member Join into the BRICS bloc

Indonesia has been officially welcomed into the BRICS bloc, marking its entry as a full member of the influential group of emerging economies. Brazil, the current chair of BRICS, confirmed the decision on Monday evening, with Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry affirming the move on Tuesday as a strategic step toward enhanced global partnerships.

“Membership in BRICS provides a valuable platform to strengthen ties with fellow developing nations and amplify the voice of the Global South,” read a statement from Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry.

The decision to include Indonesia was unanimously approved during the BRICS summit in Johannesburg in 2023. However, Jakarta opted to finalize its membership following the country’s presidential election last year, which saw President Prabowo Subianto take office in October 2024.

Brazil’s government emphasized Indonesia’s role in advancing the bloc’s agenda for global institutional reform and deepening partnerships among developing nations.

China, a founding member of BRICS, celebrated Indonesia’s addition to the bloc. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun described Indonesia as an “essential partner in fostering development and cooperation within the Global South.”

Indonesia’s inclusion is expected to inject fresh energy into BRICS, which was initially formed to counterbalance the dominance of developed economies in global decision-making.

BRICS, established by Brazil, Russia, India, and China in 2009, previously expanded to include South Africa in 2010. Last year, Indonesia officially Announced as a Full Member Join into the BRICS bloc the bloc’s collective influence continues to grow.

Several other countries, including Türkiye, Malaysia, and Azerbaijan, have also expressed interest in joining the alliance, underscoring the bloc’s increasing global relevance.

As the world’s fourth most populous nation, Indonesia brings substantial economic and geopolitical weight to BRICS. The alliance, which emerged as a counterweight to the Group of Seven (G7) of developed nations, is positioning itself as a leader in shaping global economic policies and fostering sustainable development.

Indonesia’s membership is expected to deepen cooperation across sectors, including trade, investment, and climate resilience, while strengthening the bloc’s role as a voice for the Global South.
