Iran Proposes 200% Increase in Military Budget Amid Regional Tensions

Iranian government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani revealed a proposal for a substantial increase in the military budget, suggesting an increase of nearly 200%. This recommendation follows the escalation of hostilities with Israel, which has heightened security concerns in the region.

State media reported Mohajerani’s remarks, indicating that since the outbreak of conflict, defense spending has surged dramatically. She noted that military operations by Israel in Gaza and Lebanon have significantly contributed to the growing tension. Additionally, there are recommendations on the table to potentially triple the military budget in light of these developments.

This proposed budget increase is part of a broader strategy that the Iranian government has submitted to Parliament for approval, with expectations for finalization by March 2025. Mohajerani asserted that this budgetary adjustment underscores the government’s commitment to addressing the shifting security landscape in the region.
