Iranian court has reduced the prison sentences of two journalists, Niloufar Hamedi and Elaheh Mohammadi, who were initially sentenced for allegedly collaborating with the United States and attempting to destabilize the country. The pair were arrested following the widespread protests in 2022, which erupted after the death of Mahsa Amini while in police custody.
Both journalists played a role in covering the anti-government protests, and last year, they received sentences of 13 and 12 years, respectively. However, during a news conference on Sunday, a judiciary spokesperson announced that their sentences have been reduced by five years. The decision comes after the journalists appealed their convictions, which were based on charges of colluding with foreign forces.
The 2022 protests marked one of the most significant uprisings in Iran in decades, triggered by the public outcry over the tragic incident involving Amini.
