NEW YORK — Iran’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Sa’eed Iravani, announced that 78 Iranians, including senior military commanders, were killed and 320 others wounded in a wave of Israeli military strikes on Friday. The statement came during an emergency session of the United Nations Security Council convened to address the escalating conflict.
According to Iravani, Israeli forces launched coordinated airstrikes overnight targeting both military and civilian locations in Tehran and several other Iranian cities. The attacks marked a severe escalation in hostilities, with residential areas in and around the capital also reportedly hit.
The Iranian envoy condemned the strikes as “aggressive and unlawful,” calling for immediate international intervention to prevent further escalation.
Among those killed in the strikes were Major General Mohammad Baqeri, Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff of Iran’s Armed Forces, and Major General Hossein Salami, Chief Commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Their assassinations represent one of the most significant losses for Iran’s military leadership in recent history.
In response, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei swiftly appointed replacements to key military posts, signaling Tehran’s readiness to continue military operations.
Following the attacks, Iranian forces began a series of retaliatory strikes against Israeli targets later that same day. Military analysts warn that the situation may spiral further, potentially drawing in other regional actors if diplomatic efforts fail to de-escalate tensions.
The United Nations and several member states have urged restraint on both sides, with growing fears of a broader regional conflict. The Security Council is expected to continue deliberations, though diplomatic resolution appears uncertain as hostilities intensify.
