TEHRAN—Iran has categorically informed Qatari and Omani mediators that it will not engage in negotiations with the United States or Israel while the Islamic Republic remains under attack, a diplomatic source confirmed Saturday.
The statement was made as tensions in the Middle East remain at a boiling point following a series of Israeli airstrikes on Iranian targets and Tehran’s missile retaliation.
A source with direct knowledge of the discussions told AFP that Iran made its position clear: “Tehran will only consider serious negotiations after it has completed its military response to Israel’s preemptive strikes.” The official spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the talks.
The statement directly contradicts earlier media reports claiming Iran had approached Oman and Qatar to help broker a ceasefire and reopen nuclear deal talks with the U.S.
“Reports suggesting Iran requested mediation to restart negotiations with Washington or broker a truce with Israel are inaccurate,” the source said. “Iran has made it clear that it will not negotiate while under attack.”
The fierce escalation—sparked by Israel’s launch of Operation Rising Lion and Iran’s subsequent Operation True Promise 3—has prompted global concerns over a broader regional war.
Both Qatar and Oman have previously played central roles in facilitating backchannel diplomacy between Tehran and Washington, particularly on the nuclear issue. However, the current military exchanges have rendered diplomatic efforts temporarily unviable.
