Iran Slams UN Security Council for “Wasting Opportunity” on Sanctions Resolution

Report by “Safarti Tarjuman” International News Desk

New York — Iran has strongly criticized the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) after a proposed resolution to continue lifting sanctions against Tehran failed to pass, blaming pressure from the United States and European powers.

Iran’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN, Amir Saeid Iravani, said the council had “squandered the opportunity for dialogue and consensus” by rejecting a balanced initiative from Russia and China aimed at extending Resolution 2231 and preserving diplomacy.

Speaking at a Security Council meeting on Friday, Iravani accused Washington and the E3 (Britain, France, and Germany) of choosing “escalation, pressure, and division” over diplomacy. He argued that their actions prove their true intention is not negotiation but confrontation.

Iravani emphasized that Iran fully complied with the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), subjecting itself to the most intrusive inspections by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). He said the U.S. withdrawal from the deal in 2018 and the E3’s failure to meet their obligations exposed their lack of commitment.

“The E3’s notification of August 28, 2025, is legally void and politically motivated,” he stated, adding that Western powers had bypassed the JCPOA’s dispute mechanism and undermined international law.

He further condemned Israel’s attacks on Iran’s safeguarded nuclear facilities, calling them blatant violations of international law, while criticizing the U.S. and Europe for remaining silent.

According to Iravani, Russia, China, Pakistan, and Algeria demonstrated their commitment to diplomacy by voting against coercion and supporting Iran’s right to peaceful nuclear development.

He accused the Security Council of being swayed by certain permanent members and warned that the latest move undermines global non-proliferation efforts.

Reaffirming Tehran’s position, Iravani stressed that Iran’s nuclear program remains peaceful and that sanctions or threats will not alter its course.

“Iran will defend its sovereignty and will not allow this council to be misused as an instrument of injustice,” he declared.
