Iran has summoned Italy’s ambassador in response to the arrest of Mohammad Abedini, an Iranian citizen detained in Milan on a US warrant. The US alleges Abedini’s involvement in a 2023 drone attack that killed three American soldiers in Jordan, an accusation Iran has vehemently denied.
This development comes amid Italy’s recent protests against the detention of journalist Cecilia Sala, who was arrested in Tehran on December 19 for allegedly violating Iranian laws. The two cases appear to have deepened a diplomatic rift between the nations.
Iran’s foreign ministry urged Italy to reject what it called “America’s hostage policy” and demanded Abedini’s immediate release. Iranian state media warned of potential harm to Italy-Iran relations if the situation remains unresolved.
Italy has expressed concern over Sala’s arrest, calling for her humane treatment and immediate release. The Italian embassy in Tehran has been closely monitoring her case, while Iran claims Sala is receiving proper humanitarian care.
Abedini, a businessman, was arrested at Milan’s Malpensa airport and remains in custody. Italian courts are expected to rule soon on whether he will be placed under house arrest while the US extradition request is reviewed.
Observers note that this incident fits a broader pattern of Iranian authorities detaining foreigners and dual nationals, often on allegations of espionage or security breaches. Critics accuse Tehran of using such arrests as leverage in geopolitical negotiations, a claim Iran denies.
