Iranian Cleric Gholam Reza Qasemi Detained in Saudi Arabia Over Online Criticism
Report by Safarti Tarjuman International Desk
Prominent Iranian religious scholar Gholam Reza Qasemi has been detained in Saudi Arabia during his Hajj pilgrimage, reportedly over a critical social media post targeting the Saudi government.
According to international news outlets, the arrest occurred while Qasemi was in the Kingdom for religious purposes. His post allegedly criticized the Saudi leadership, prompting swift action by authorities.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi condemned the incident, stating that any actions threatening Muslim unity—particularly during Hajj—are unacceptable. He reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to strengthening diplomatic ties with Saudi Arabia and warned against efforts to sabotage these improving relations.
Araghchi praised the excellent arrangements made by Saudi authorities for this year’s Hajj and extended congratulations to the Saudi leadership and people for ensuring smooth execution of the pilgrimage.
Iran’s judiciary issued a statement calling Qasemi’s detention illegal and unjust. The statement demanded his immediate release and labeled the arrest a violation of international and religious rights.
Meanwhile, the Saudi Ministry of Information has yet to respond publicly to the arrest or the Iranian statements.
