Chairman Senate of Pakistan, Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, met with Iranian Ambassador Dr. Reza Amiri Moghaddam in Islamabad on Wednesday to discuss the recent Iran-Israel ceasefire, regional developments, and ways to enhance Pakistan-Iran bilateral relations through diplomacy, trade, and defense cooperation.
During the meeting, Chairman Gilani welcomed the establishment of a ceasefire between Iran and Israel, praising Iran’s leadership, military, and people for their resilience and composure under pressure. “We commend the Iranian nation for its courage and defense efforts during this testing time,” he stated.
He extended condolences for the loss of senior military officers, scientists, and civilians in the Israeli attacks, emphasizing Pakistan’s firm condemnation of Israeli aggression and reiterating Islamabad’s support for Iran’s sovereignty and its right to self-defense under the United Nations Charter.
Gilani noted that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had repeatedly engaged with Iranian leadership since June 13, voicing strong opposition to Israeli actions and assuring full solidarity with Tehran. He highlighted Pakistan’s active stance at international forums, including a resolution passed by the Senate condemning Israel’s violation of Iran’s territorial integrity.
He also referenced Pakistan’s support for the joint statement issued by the 51st OIC Foreign Ministers’ Conference and endorsed by over 21 Arab and African nations, denouncing Israeli military actions.
Discussing bilateral relations, Gilani emphasized the importance of deepening economic cooperation, boosting defense ties, and facilitating trade through mechanisms like the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC). He stressed the need for high-level exchanges to further build mutual trust and regional collaboration.
The Chairman also recalled his previous official visits to Iran, both as Prime Minister and Speaker of the National Assembly, describing them as “constructive and memorable.” He mentioned recent diplomatic engagements with Iran during international forums such as the IPU and NAM summits, where both countries supported each other’s positions.
Gilani highlighted Pakistan’s continued role in promoting diplomacy during international crises, including during heightened tensions with India. He stressed that Islam is a religion of peace and called for Muslim unity in the face of external aggression and injustice.
The Iranian ambassador thanked the Chairman Senate, Parliament, and the people of Pakistan for their support during the recent crisis and shared updates on the current regional situation.
