TEHRAN – Iranian state media has confirmed the death of Hossein Salami, the commander of Iran’s elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), in a targeted Israeli airstrike. Salami’s martyred marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel.
General Hossein Salami, a central figure in Iran’s military and political hierarchy, was reportedly killed during Israeli aerial attacks launched early Friday. The IRGC, a powerful institution in Iran’s theocratic system, oversees the country’s ballistic missile arsenal and exerts wide influence over military and intelligence affairs.
Salami had recently addressed a national ceremony commemorating the late President Ebrahim Raisi and was considered one of the most influential hardline voices in the regime.
According to Israeli sources, the airstrike that killed Salami also eliminated other key military leaders and nuclear scientists. Among those believed to have been martyred:
- Mohammad Bagheri, Chief of Iran’s Armed Forces
- Several members of Iran’s military high command
- Senior figures involved in the country’s nuclear program
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have described the strikes as a strategic preemptive move against Iran’s nuclear and military infrastructure.
