Islamabad High Court Grants Bail to Imran Khan in Toshakhana-II Case

The Islamabad High Court has approved bail for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and former Prime Minister Imran Khan in the Toshakhana-II case. The court ordered his release against surety bonds worth 1 million PKR.

Justice Mian Gul Hassan Aurangzeb presided over the hearing. The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) prosecutor argued that state gifts were undervalued to benefit Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi. He claimed this act caused financial harm to the state.

During the proceedings, Justice Aurangzeb remarked, “If the media doesn’t create sensationalism, how will their business run?” He further added humorously, “My wife’s belongings are not mine. I don’t know which world we are living in.”

Imran Khan’s lawyer, Barrister Salman Safdar, maintained that no clear crime was proven in the case and that the allegations were based on the misuse of influence for personal benefit. He explained that the gifts were acquired under the Toshakhana policy of the time, with their declared value duly paid.

The defense also highlighted procedural flaws, pointing out a delay of over three and a half years in registering the case. It was emphasized that such delays typically warrant further investigation and interim relief for the accused.

The court questioned the prosecution about the role of customs officers who allegedly undervalued the gifts. The FIA prosecutor admitted negligence on their part but stated it did not constitute criminal misconduct.

In its remarks, the court stated that the case required further inquiry, justifying the decision to grant bail. However, the court warned that the bail could be revoked if it was misused.

The Islamabad High Court granted post-arrest bail to Imran Khan and instructed him to appear before the trial court to ensure the case proceeds. The court’s decision marks a crucial development in the Toshakhana-II case, which has been a focal point of legal proceedings against the PTI chief.
