The Israeli government, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has announced an expansion of Jewish settlements on the Golan Heights, reaffirming its control over the contested region. Netanyahu stated that the move aims to enhance Israel’s security and bolster its strategic presence in the area.
“Strengthening the Golan Heights is integral to Israel’s strength,” Netanyahu said, highlighting plans to fortify military defenses in the region, which serves as a buffer zone with Syria.
In parallel, Netanyahu engaged in a phone conversation with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump. The leaders reportedly discussed pressing regional issues, including developments in Gaza and Syria. The call also touched upon efforts to secure the release of hostages held in Gaza.
Netanyahu emphasized that Israel does not seek conflict with Syria, asserting that military actions are focused solely on neutralizing potential threats.
The announcement has sparked international debate, with critics pointing to the Golan Heights’ disputed status. Captured by Israel during the 1967 Six-Day War and later annexed, the area remains unrecognized by much of the international community as Israeli territory.
