Doha: Negotiations aimed at securing a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas concluded in Doha on Sunday without any concrete progress, dealing a blow to hopes for a 60-day truce in war-ravaged Gaza.
According to Palestinian representatives, the Israeli delegation arrived in Qatar without sufficient decision-making powers, rendering the first round of talks largely symbolic. As a result, negotiators were unable to move forward on critical points, leaving the ceasefire framework in limbo.
Before the talks began, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned:
“Hamas’s latest demands are unacceptable for Israel, but we are sending a senior-level team in good faith.”
Analysts argue that such statements risk undermining the credibility of the negotiation process and cast doubt on Israel’s willingness to compromise.
Mediation efforts continue under the leadership of Qatar and the United States, which recently tabled a new ceasefire and prisoner exchange proposal. Hamas had responded positively to the framework last week, giving rise to cautious optimism among international observers.
Speaking in New Jersey, U.S. President Donald Trump sounded hopeful, telling reporters:
“There is a good chance we can reach a deal with Hamas this week. We could even see some hostages freed. I plan to discuss Iran and a permanent ceasefire with Netanyahu as well.”
Trump further noted that while Israel had agreed to the basic outlines of a 60-day ceasefire, the actual implementation would depend on political will and the evolving security situation on the ground.
As ceasefire negotiations struggle to gain traction, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to deteriorate. Severe shortages of food, medicine, and essential supplies have triggered alarms among humanitarian agencies and the United Nations.
International analysts have cautioned:
“If no substantial progress is made within the coming days, the risk of renewed hostilities and a wider military escalation cannot be ruled out.”
