Israel’s Security Cabinet Approves Ceasefire Deal with Hamas

Israel’s Security Cabinet has approved a ceasefire deal with Hamas, including a hostage exchange for Palestinian prisoners, according to a statement from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office.

Despite opposition from far-right ministers, the decision was widely expected. The agreement now moves to Netanyahu’s coalition government for final approval, which is anticipated to pave the way for the ceasefire to take effect on Sunday at 10:15 GMT.

– The first phase of the deal includes a six-week pause in fighting.
– Hamas will release 33 hostages held in Gaza.
– Israel will free Palestinian prisoners from its jails.
– The first group of hostages is expected to be released at 4 PM (1400 GMT) on Sunday.

The ceasefire agreement follows months of indirect negotiations, mediated by Qatar and the United States.

The ongoing war in Gaza began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas-led fighters launched an attack from the coastal enclave, killing approximately 1,200 people in southern Israel. Since then, the conflict has resulted in devastating consequences for the region, with Gaza’s health authorities reporting over 46,000 deaths over the past 15 months.

Netanyahu’s office has stated that the agreement aligns with the Israeli government’s war objectives and could mark a step toward ending hostilities in Gaza. However, the success of the truce will depend on its implementation and adherence by both parties.
