Doha/Jerusalem — Israel carried out an airstrike in Qatar targeting senior Hamas leaders, including chief negotiator Khalil Al-Hayya, officials confirmed.
The strike, which destroyed a residential complex in Doha, killed five Hamas members, including Al-Hayya’s son and his office director. Hamas later confirmed Al-Hayya survived. A Qatari security officer was also killed in the attack, according to Qatari authorities.
Qatar reacted sharply, with Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani denouncing the strike as “state terrorism” and a grave violation of sovereignty.
“This is a message to the entire region: that there is a rogue player operating without restraint,” he said during a press conference in Doha.
Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed Al Ansari condemned the attack as “cowardly,” stressing that Doha “will not tolerate reckless and irresponsible Israeli behavior.”
Shortly after the strike, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that Israel had accepted a new US ceasefire proposal while vowing to continue targeting Hamas leadership worldwide.
“The days when the heads of terror enjoyed immunity anywhere are over,” Netanyahu declared at a US Embassy event in Jerusalem.
Israeli officials said the strike involved over 10 fighter jets launching more than 10 precision munitions at a single target in Doha.
The airstrike threatens to undermine Qatar’s role as a key mediator in Gaza ceasefire talks. For months, Doha has hosted indirect negotiations between Hamas, Israel, and the United States, with senior Israeli officials, including the head of Mossad, traveling to Qatar.
The attack also sparked outrage among families of Israeli hostages. Einav Zangauker, whose son is held in Gaza, said the strike endangered hostages’ lives:
“It could be that at this very moment, the prime minister has essentially executed my son, sentenced him to death. Why is he destroying every chance for a deal?”
UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the Israeli strike, emphasizing Qatar’s “positive role” in ceasefire mediation and efforts to secure the release of hostages.
With negotiations already stalled, analysts warn the strike may further escalate tensions, making both a ceasefire and hostage deal more difficult to achieve.
