Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asserted on Thursday that Israel would take all necessary measures to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, following a warning from Iran’s top diplomat about possibly ending its ban on nuclear weapons development if Western sanctions are reinstated.
Netanyahu, speaking to Israeli media, stated, “I will do everything to prevent Iran from becoming a nuclear power, using all the resources at our disposal.” Israel, which is believed to possess nuclear weapons but has not officially declared it, considers preventing Iran from obtaining such weapons a top security priority.
This escalation comes as Iran prepares for crucial nuclear talks with European powers on Friday, overshadowed by ongoing tensions over Tehran’s uranium enrichment program, which has been ramped up to 60%. While Iran insists its nuclear ambitions are for peaceful purposes, this level of enrichment brings it closer to the threshold needed for nuclear weapons development.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi recently expressed frustration over the lack of progress in lifting sanctions, noting an internal debate in Iran about potentially changing its nuclear policy. Despite this, Iran continues to assert its commitment to a fatwa, issued by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei, which prohibits the development of nuclear weapons.
The upcoming talks are critical as Iran seeks to navigate diplomatic pressure from both the United States and European nations, all while balancing its stance on nuclear policy and regional security issues, including its involvement in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
