Italian journalist Cecilia Sala, who had been detained in Iran for three weeks, has been released and has safely returned to Rome, according to a statement from Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s office.

The journalist’s release was secured after extensive diplomatic and intelligence efforts. Sala’s detention on December 19 occurred while she was reporting on regional developments, particularly in Iran, following the fall of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s government.

The Italian government expressed relief over her return, highlighting the tireless work conducted through various channels to ensure her safety and release.

Cecilia Sala’s arrival back in Italy marks the conclusion of a tense diplomatic episode, drawing attention to the challenges journalists face while covering sensitive issues in volatile regions.
