Saudi Arabia’s King Salman bin Abdulaziz inaugurated the Riyadh Metro Project on Wednesday, November 27, 2024. The much-anticipated metro system is set to transform public transportation in the capital, aiming to significantly reduce traffic congestion while offering a world-class commuting experience.
Spanning 176 kilometers across six lines and featuring 85 stations, including four major hubs, the Riyadh Metro represents one of the most ambitious urban mobility projects in the region. The first phase, launched today, covers three key routes. Services on the remaining three routes are expected to commence by mid-December.
The launch ceremony included a detailed video presentation showcasing the project’s evolution from conception to completion. Officials highlighted the metro’s potential to ease traffic and its importance as a cornerstone of Riyadh’s public transport system.
Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman expressed gratitude to King Salman for his leadership in realizing this groundbreaking initiative. “What was once an idea is now a tangible reality,” he said. “This metro is not just an infrastructure project; it is a reflection of our vision for a modern, connected Riyadh.”
Routes Operational in Phase 1
- Al-Orouba to Al-Batha
- King Khalid International Airport to Ring Road
- Abdul Rahman bin Awf to Sheikh Hassan bin Hussein
The upcoming second phase will expand coverage, connecting King Abdullah Road with King Abdulaziz City, further enhancing mobility options for residents and visitors.
Approved by the Saudi Cabinet in April 2012, the Riyadh Metro was conceived as a solution to rising urban traffic. Construction began shortly thereafter, with the project being integrated into the broader goals of Vision 2030, a roadmap for diversifying and modernizing Saudi Arabia’s economy.
