
Kohat Grand Jirga Resolves Kurram Dispute; Peace Agreement Signed

The Grand Jirga in Kohat addressing the tense situation in Kurram District has successfully concluded, with both parties signing a peace agreement. The agreement comprises 14 points, unanimously agreed upon by the stakeholders.
Agreement Highlights
Jirga member Malik Sawab Khan confirmed the development, revealing that 45 representatives from each side signed the agreement. Key provisions include:
- Ceasefire Implementation: Both parties agreed to an immediate ceasefire.
- Disarmament: Parties will dismantle their fortifications and surrender weapons.
- Restoration of Routes: Steps are being planned to reopen roads and ensure safe passage.
- Violation Consequences: Any breach of the agreement will be referred to the government.
The pact also mandates collaboration with law enforcement agencies to maintain peace and compensates for losses incurred during the conflict. Heavy weaponry will be placed under government control.
Jirga member Syed Raza Hussain praised the historic resolution, noting that after prolonged negotiations, both factions signed the agreement. “One side signed three days earlier, and the other has now followed suit,” he stated.
Kohat Commissioner also confirmed the success of the negotiations, adding that only three signatures remain pending.
Speaking to the media, Malik Sawab Khan stated that restoring normalcy in Kurram will require time, estimating one to two months for full recovery. He also clarified that decisions regarding road openings would rest with the government.
Representatives from the Shia community signed under the leadership of Anjuman Hussainia, while the Sunni community’s signatories were led by Anjuman Farooqia.
The peace agreement marks a significant step toward resolving long-standing tensions in the region, with all parties committed to ensuring sustained harmony.
