Lebanese Army Dismantles Over 90% of Hezbollah Positions Near Israel Border
Report By Safarti Tarjuman International Desk
The Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) have dismantled more than 90 percent of Hezbollah’s military infrastructure south of the Litani River, a senior security official revealed on Tuesday, as international pressure mounts on Beirut to curb armed resistance groups operating near the Israeli border.
The announcement comes amid heightened diplomatic engagement between Lebanese officials and the United States. President Joseph Aoun met with U.S. Ambassador Lisa Johnson, outgoing U.S. General Jasper Jeffers, and his successor General Michael J. Leeney, who will oversee the U.S.-mediated ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel.
The dismantling of Hezbollah’s positions follows the fragile ceasefire agreed last November, aimed at de-escalating hostilities along the volatile southern border.
Aoun Reaffirms Disarmament Plans
In an interview with Sky News, President Aoun underscored the government’s determination to disarm non-state actors, including Hezbollah and armed groups in Palestinian refugee camps.
“The priority is to collect heavy and medium weapons. Light weapons are deeply embedded in Lebanese culture, but even that must be addressed gradually,” Aoun said, adding that disarmament must include Palestinian factions.
Hezbollah Urges Government to Defend Sovereignty
Hezbollah, which has refrained from obstructing LAF deployments in the border region, has reiterated its demand for the government to defend Lebanon’s sovereignty in the face of continued Israeli aggression.
“The priority is ending Israeli violations, withdrawing from southern Lebanon, and starting reconstruction,” said Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Qassem in a recent speech. “The state wants to take full control but fails to fulfill its responsibilities. It must do more.”
Qassem also accused the U.S. and Israel of attempting to weaken Lebanon and impose regional political agendas.
Meanwhile, Hezbollah MP Ihab Hamadeh emphasized that the issue of arms remains a domestic concern, to be addressed as part of a comprehensive national defense strategy, independent of foreign pressure.
