The Lahore High Court has issued significant directives in response to Punjab’s escalating smog crisis, mandating the implementation of a work-from-home policy and instructing markets to close by 8 PM. Additionally, the court ruled that all markets should remain shut on Sundays as a preventive measure.
Presiding over the case on environmental pollution and smog control, Justice Shahid Karim highlighted the critical nature of the situation, stating that while immediate results are unlikely, consistent efforts over five years could yield meaningful outcomes. He cited China’s successful anti-smog strategies as a model for long-term improvement.
The court further ordered a ban on smoke-emitting vehicles from accessing motorways and the Ring Road, emphasizing their significant contribution to pollution. Heavy traffic, including trucks and trailers, is now restricted from entering the city, with enforcement to be carried out by the Dolphin police and other authorities. Justice Karim suggested imposing fines of PKR 50,000 on violators as a deterrent.
The judge remarked that these measures aim to support the government’s efforts, even if met with mixed reactions. He underscored the necessity for the administration to monitor air quality conditions at night and to ensure realistic compliance with regulations.
