Lukashenko Rejects U.S. Ceasefire Proposal, Calls Washington’s Ukraine Strategy Weak
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has dismissed Washington’s proposal for a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine, claiming the United States has no clear strategy to end the conflict.
Speaking after a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, Lukashenko asserted that the U.S. lacks a structured plan for peace. “The Americans have absolutely no concrete plan for resolving the Ukraine conflict,” he told reporters, as per Belarusian state media.
His comments coincided with Trump’s envoy, Steve Witkoff, arriving in Moscow to present the U.S. ceasefire initiative. The proposal has received Kyiv’s backing, contingent on Russia’s agreement.
However, Lukashenko dismissed the move as an attempt to “gauge reactions”, suggesting that Putin might reject it, especially considering Russia’s recent military successes, particularly in Kursk.
“Russia currently has the upper hand on the battlefield, making it unlikely they will accept such terms,” he stated, emphasizing that additional U.S. sanctions would have no impact on Moscow’s decisions.
While Putin has not yet commented publicly, Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov described the U.S.-Ukraine ceasefire push as “rushed”, arguing that it “lacks a long-term resolution strategy”.
Lukashenko further disclosed that Putin intends to update him on ongoing U.S.-Ukrainian negotiations in Saudi Arabia, where diplomatic discussions are in progress.
