Luton Council’s 19 Non-Muslim Staff Observe Fast in Solidarity with Muslim Colleagues
19 non-Muslim staff members of Luton Borough Council observed a fast on March 11 to show solidarity with their Muslim colleagues during the holy month of Ramadan.
The group refrained from food and drink from 4:52 AM to 6:01 PM, joining their Muslim coworkers in experiencing the essence of fasting. Luton Borough Council, which has a significant number of Muslim councillors and staff, saw this initiative as a gesture of support, empathy, and inclusivity.
As part of the event, Muslim councillors and staff members prepared and provided food for the evening Iftar meal, allowing all participants to break their fast together at Town Hall. The initiative highlighted the collective spirit of different faiths and backgrounds coming together, fostering a sense of community and mutual understanding.
Beyond solidarity, the event also served a charitable cause, raising funds for Community Against Poverty (CAP) Foundation’s Orphan Village in Bangladesh, which aims to protect vulnerable children from exploitation and hardship.
Luton Mayor, Councillor Tahmina Saleem, who also took part in preparing Iftar meals, expressed her appreciation, stating:
“I sincerely thank and congratulate our officers and fellow councillors for taking part in this commendable initiative. Fasting together gave us an opportunity to experience hunger and thirst firsthand, fostering a deeper understanding of Ramadan’s significance. I applaud our staff for embodying the true spirit of Ramadan by supporting those in need.”
Adam Kearney, Head of Communications at Luton Council and the event’s organizer, emphasized the meaningful impact of the initiative:
“This day was incredibly significant for all participants. Beyond showing support and respect for our Muslim colleagues, it also provided a valuable opportunity to enhance our understanding of a faith that is deeply meaningful to many of our friends, councillors, and coworkers.”
