United Nations — French President Emmanuel Macron warned that Israel’s reliance on military force will not succeed in eliminating Hamas, stressing the need for a comprehensive political solution to the Gaza conflict. His comments came during a high-profile meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.
“Israel has killed Hamas’s main leaders, which is a significant achievement. But there are just as many Hamas militants today as there were on the first day. This approach will not eradicate Hamas,” Macron said in front of reporters at the start of the meeting. “What we need is a broader, long-term solution, and we are working very hard on that path.”
In a separate interview with BFMTV ahead of the Trump meeting, Macron said the American president cannot expect to claim the Nobel Peace Prize unless he takes decisive steps to stop the Gaza war.
Highlighting Washington’s influence, Macron noted that the United States continues to supply Israel with the weapons used in its military operations. He urged the White House to apply stronger pressure on Israel’s government to achieve three urgent goals:
- An immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
- The release of remaining hostages held by Hamas.
- The opening of humanitarian corridors to allow aid into the besieged enclave.
The French leader reiterated that military action alone risks entrenching conflict rather than resolving it. Macron emphasized that a sustainable two-state solution remains the only viable path to peace and security for both Israelis and Palestinians.
His remarks add to growing pressure from European leaders who have voiced frustration over Israel’s Gaza campaign and called for renewed diplomacy, with France taking a leading role in advocating for a broader peace framework.
