Marxist Economist Anura Kumara Elected President of Sri Lanka

In a historic turn of events, Anura Kumara, a staunch advocate of Marxist economic policies, has been elected as Sri Lanka’s new president, marking a major shift in the country’s political landscape following the economic collapse of 2022.

The 55-year-old Kumara triumphed over opposition leader Sajith Premadasa, securing the confidence of the people. Speaking after his win, he declared, “This victory symbolizes the dawn of a new era for Sri Lanka. Our hopes for development and stability will now come to fruition.”

Kumara also highlighted the importance of national unity, stating, “The solidarity of the Sri Lankan people is the cornerstone of this new beginning.”

The election, held after the devastating economic crisis, saw no candidate winning an outright majority in the first round. Incumbent President Ranil Wickremesinghe, who received just 17% of the vote, was knocked out early in the race.
