Mass Petition Calls for Revocation of Elon Musk’s Canadian Citizenship
A growing movement in Canada is pushing to revoke Elon Musk’s citizenship, with over 170,000 people signing a parliamentary petition. The petition, initiated by British Columbia author Qualia Reed and backed by New Democrat Party MP Charlie Angus, argues that Musk’s involvement in the Trump administration threatens Canada’s sovereignty.
Musk, born in South Africa, holds Canadian citizenship through his mother, Maye Musk, who was born in Regina. As a key adviser to U.S. President Donald Trump, Musk heads the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), overseeing government downsizing and budget cuts. Critics claim his role aligns with U.S. interests at the expense of Canada, particularly as Trump has repeatedly floated harsh trade measures and even suggested Canada could become the 51st U.S. state.
Reed’s petition states that Musk has actively worked against Canada’s national interests and calls on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to strip him of his dual citizenship. While parliamentary petitions require only 500 signatures for certification, the overwhelming response highlights widespread concerns over Musk’s influence.
Canada’s parliament is currently suspended following Trudeau’s announcement of his planned resignation after nine years in office. The House of Commons is set to resume on March 24, but a general election could be called before then. Meanwhile, Musk has continued to stir controversy on social media, attacking Trudeau and endorsing Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre.
The petition’s signing period remains open until June 20, though the government is not obligated to respond.
