THE HAGUE— More than 150,000 people gathered in the Dutch city of The Hague on Sunday to protest Israel’s ongoing siege of Gaza and the Dutch government’s failure to strongly oppose the violence.
The demonstration, the second major protest in a month, saw participants dressed in red to create a powerful visual “red line” symbolizing resistance to what they described as war crimes against Palestinians. Protesters called on the caretaker Dutch government to take a decisive stand against Israeli military actions.
Protesters voiced growing frustration with the Dutch government’s muted response, especially in the wake of its collapse on June 3.
While caretaker Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp recently urged the EU to reconsider its cooperation with Israel, demonstrators said more must be done to uphold international law and protect human rights.
Protesters demanded the caretaker government take a firmer stance against what they describe as clear violations of international law by Israel. Chants, banners, and speeches at the rally emphasized accountability, solidarity with Gaza, and an immediate end to military operations.
The protest also reflected rising opposition to far-right influence in Dutch politics. Former ruling party leader Geert Wilders, known for his staunch support of Israel and anti-Muslim rhetoric, has been a vocal defender of Israel throughout the conflict. His position has further fueled public anger, especially among pro-Palestinian and human rights activists.
Sunday’s demonstration sent a clear message: the Dutch public is demanding accountability, justice for Palestinians, and a foreign policy grounded in human rights and international law.
