Mexican Navy Ship Collides with Brooklyn Bridge, Leaving Two Dead and Multiple Injured
Report by Safarti Tarjuman International Desk
A tragic accident unfolded on Saturday as the Mexican Navy’s training ship Cuauhtémoc collided with the historic Brooklyn Bridge during a goodwill tour in New York City, resulting in a fatal maritime disaster that claimed two lives and injured 19 others, including two critically.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams confirmed that the vessel, carrying 277 people on board, lost power as it approached the East River crossing. The upper masts of the ship struck the bridge, causing three of them to snap and partially collapse. Shocking footage captured by bystanders showed fragments of the towering masts crashing onto the bridge deck, where heavy traffic and pedestrians were present at the time.
The *Cuauhtémoc*, carrying 277 personnel, was flying the Mexican national flag and was in New York as part of an international diplomatic and naval training mission. The ship lost control near the bridge and eventually drifted toward the shoreline adjacent to the Manhattan Bridge. Spectators at Brooklyn Bridge Park watched in horror as the accident unfolded.
Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene. Two individuals were removed from the ship on stretchers and transported via smaller boats for immediate medical attention.
The Mexican Navy confirmed in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that the Cuauhtémoc sustained damage in the crash, which has halted its scheduled journey. It assured that naval and local authorities are jointly assessing the status of the ship, crew, and material. The navy emphasized its continued commitment to the safety of its personnel and the professional training of its future officers.
