Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has firmly stated that her country will not close its borders with the United States.
The statement came after a telephone conversation between Sheinbaum and U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, where both leaders expressed differing views. According to U.S. media reports, Trump claimed that Sheinbaum had agreed to stop migrants heading to the U.S. from Mexico. However, Sheinbaum responded on social media, saying that Mexico’s position is clear: “We will not close our borders.”
Despite the differing statements, both sides framed the call positively, although Trump had earlier threatened to impose a 25% tariff on Mexico in response to migration issues, prompting a warning of countermeasures from the Mexican government.
Trump posted on his Truth Social platform:
“Had a tremendous conversation with the new president of Mexico, she agreed to stop migration from Mexico to the U.S. and is effectively closing our southern border.”
In response, Sheinbaum quickly clarified her stance, emphasizing that she had explained Mexico’s “comprehensive strategy” for dealing with migration. She reiterated that this strategy involves providing care to migrants before they reach the border, stating, “Mexico’s position is not to close the borders but to build a bridge between the government and the people.”
Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico’s first female president, also shared a photo of herself smiling during the call and discussed cooperation on “security issues” as well as efforts to curb drug use in Mexico.
Earlier, Trump had also stated on social media that one of his first actions upon taking office in January would be to impose a 25% tariff on imports from Mexico and Canada.
