Migrant boat capsizes in Tunisia, killing eight, rescuing 29.
Report By Safarti Tarjuman International Desk
The coast guard recovered the bodies of eight African migrants after their boat sank off the coast of Tunisia on Monday, a security official confirmed to Reuters, adding that at least 29 survivors had been rescued during ongoing search operations.
The ship capsized in the waters near the town of Abou Abid, near Sfax – a major departure point for African migrants trying to reach Europe.
Search and rescue efforts were ongoing as authorities feared more passengers were still missing, Tunisian National Guard spokesman Hossam Eddine Jebabli said.
Tunisia is facing a growing migration crisis, emerging as a major transit hub for migrants from across Africa. In recent years, the country has overtaken Libya as the main departure point for migrants seeking a safe future in Europe.
The latest tragedy highlights the perilous journey migrants make, risking their lives to cross the Mediterranean amid tight immigration controls and dangerous sea conditions.
Authorities have stepped up patrols and search operations along the Tunisian coast in response to the growing number of incidents involving migrant boats.
