Mongolia’s Prime Minister Resigns After Confidence Vote Defeat Amid Protests

Mongolia’s Prime Minister Oyun-Erdene Luvsannamsrai has officially resigned after failing to secure enough votes in a parliamentary confidence vote, marking the end of his four-year tenure amid widespread protests and mounting public dissatisfaction.

Oyun-Erdene received only 44 votes in favor out of the 64 required, as confirmed by Mongolian media outlet ikon.mn and the country’s embassy in Washington. The vote followed weeks of public protests over reports of excessive spending by the prime minister’s son, sparking accusations of corruption and elitism.

Calls for Oyun-Erdene’s resignation grew louder as demonstrators gathered in Ulaanbaatar’s Sükhbaatar Square, accusing the government of neglecting everyday citizens while the wealthy benefit disproportionately from Mongolia’s mineral wealth.

Ahead of the vote, Oyun-Erdene warned that his removal could destabilize the country’s fragile democratic institutions. “If governance becomes unstable… it could lead the public to lose faith in parliamentary rule,” he cautioned. Despite defending his leadership and vision, he admitted to focusing too heavily on major development projects at the expense of domestic political engagement.

The resignation comes at a sensitive time for Mongolia. The parliament was recently expanded from 76 to 126 seats after electoral reforms, resulting in a coalition government. Despite democratic advancements since the fall of the Soviet Union, widespread poverty and inequality continue to fuel discontent.
