Brussels — NATO’s North Atlantic Council will meet on Tuesday to address what Estonia has described as an “unprecedentedly brazen” airspace violation by Russian fighter jets, officials confirmed. The incident marks a sharp escalation in Baltic security tensions as the war in Ukraine continues to strain relations between Moscow and the Western alliance.
Tallinn reported that three Russian MiG-31 aircraft crossed into Estonian airspace on Friday, remaining for about 12 minutes before being forced out. In response, Estonia invoked Article 4 of the Washington Treaty, which allows NATO allies to consult whenever a member state feels its security or territorial integrity is under threat.
Russia’s Defense Ministry rejected Estonia’s claim, insisting its jets were operating over neutral waters in the Baltic Sea. The denial comes despite photographic evidence released by the Swedish armed forces, which tracked the aircraft after they left Estonian airspace.
The incursion follows an earlier episode on September 9–10, when over 20 Russian drones entered Polish airspace, prompting NATO forces to intercept several. Western officials believe Moscow is deliberately testing NATO’s readiness and response capacity, raising fears of further escalations across the alliance’s eastern flank.
