Jerusalem — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has delayed announcing a military course of action in Gaza, pushing the decision to next week due to rising disagreements within his cabinet and faltering negotiations with Hamas, according to a source familiar with the matter.
The delay comes at a critical time, as the Israeli government debates whether to encircle Gaza City or fully invade and capture key urban areas, should diplomatic efforts with Hamas fail to progress.
Netanyahu’s cabinet remains divided on the response to Hamas’ refusal to accept a ceasefire deal. One faction supports a limited operation aimed at surrounding major population centers, while others advocate a full-scale military conquest of Gaza City.
Sources suggest Netanyahu is weighing the long-term consequences of either option as tensions escalate in the region and humanitarian conditions in Gaza continue to deteriorate.
On Thursday, a senior Israeli official revealed that Israel and the United States are working toward a new strategic framework for Gaza. This shift follows Hamas’ disengagement from Doha-based ceasefire and hostage talks, leading both countries to withdraw their negotiation teams.
While the U.S. had accused Hamas of negotiating in bad faith, Israel has expressed openness to return to talks—provided Hamas re-engages constructively.
Hamas insists it will not rejoin negotiations until the dire humanitarian conditions in Gaza improve significantly. Basem Naim, a senior official from Hamas’ political bureau, stated that “a written response from the enemy” and substantial humanitarian assistance are preconditions to resuming dialogue.
In an official statement, Hamas declared readiness to “immediately reengage in negotiations” once critical aid reaches civilians and the hunger crisis is addressed. The group added that discussions under conditions of “mass starvation” are ineffective and unjust.
As peace efforts remain stalled, Gaza’s humanitarian disaster has deepened. The United Nations confirmed this week that all 2.1 million residents in Gaza are food insecure, with 900,000 children going hungry and 70,000 suffering from malnutrition.
