TEL AVIV – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has firmly rejected international recognition of a Palestinian state, vowing there will be “no Palestinian state west of the Jordan River.” His remarks came after several Western nations, including the UK, Canada, Australia, and Portugal, formally recognized Palestinian statehood in coordinated announcements on Sunday.
In a statement released by his office, Netanyahu dismissed the recognition efforts as “rewarding terrorism.”
“There will be no Palestinian state. The response to the latest attempt to force upon us a terror state in the heart of our land will be given after my return from the United States,” Netanyahu declared.
He criticized the countries recognizing Palestine, particularly in the aftermath of the October 7 Hamas attacks, arguing that such moves jeopardize Israel’s security and undermine its sovereignty.
The recognition of Palestine by Western allies marks a significant shift in international diplomacy, particularly as these countries are the first among G7 members to formally endorse Palestinian statehood.
Analysts suggest the coordinated move reflects growing frustration with Israel’s policies in Gaza and the continued expansion of settlements in the West Bank. The development is expected to intensify debates at the United Nations General Assembly this week.
Netanyahu’s remarks are likely to escalate tensions both regionally and internationally. Arab states, including Saudi Arabia, have warned that Israeli annexation efforts or rejection of Palestinian sovereignty could destabilize regional security and strain the Abraham Accords.
Meanwhile, more European nations, such as France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Malta, are reportedly considering similar recognition measures in the coming days.
