JERUSALEM — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said that eliminating Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is not off the table, suggesting such a move could bring an end to the long-standing conflict between Israel and Iran.
Netanyahu made the controversial remarks during an interview on Sunday, further intensifying regional tensions amid ongoing hostilities involving Iran-backed groups and Israeli military operations.
Asked whether Israel would ever consider targeting Khamenei directly, Netanyahu responded,
“Nothing is off the table. If we want to end this conflict, we need to eliminate the source—and that source is Khamenei.”
His comments reflect an escalated tone amid heightened clashes with Iranian proxies in Lebanon, Syria, and Gaza, as well as Tehran’s nuclear ambitions.
Iranian officials quickly condemned the remarks, labeling them as “state-sponsored terrorism” and warning of severe retaliation. The Iranian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that any direct action against its leadership would “ignite a fire across the region.”
The statement comes at a time of rising military activity. Israel has increased its strikes against Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon, while Iran continues to support militant groups in Gaza and Syria.
International analysts warn that any direct attack on Iran’s supreme leadership could trigger a regional war and severely destabilize the Middle East.
World powers have yet to officially respond, but UN officials and European diplomats have expressed concern over the rhetoric. The United States, while reaffirming Israel’s right to defend itself, has so far refrained from endorsing or condemning Netanyahu’s specific comments.
