Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah Sworn in as Namibia’s First Female President
Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah made history as she was officially sworn in as Namibia’s first female president, marking a significant milestone in the country’s political landscape.
The 72-year-old leader, a veteran of Namibia’s liberation struggle, assumed office on the 35th anniversary of the nation’s independence. Originally planned for a large stadium event, the inauguration was moved to the presidential office due to heavy rain.
Nandi-Ndaitwah’s election victory in November 2024 positioned her among a select group of female African leaders, including former Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, former Malawian President Joyce Banda, and current Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan—all of whom attended the ceremony.
Several regional leaders, including officials from South Africa, Zambia, Congo, Botswana, Angola, and Kenya, were also present to witness the historic moment.
Nandi-Ndaitwah takes over from Nangolo Mbumba, who served as interim president following the passing of Hage Geingob in February 2024. Prior to her presidency, she held key government positions, including Vice President and Minister of International Relations and Cooperation.
Her leadership is expected to bring continuity to the ruling SWAPO Party while addressing pressing issues such as economic reform, social development, and youth empowerment.
A Legacy of Leadership
Having dedicated nearly six decades to Namibia’s political journey, Nandi-Ndaitwah is seen as a symbol of resilience and progress. Her presidency marks a turning point for gender representation in leadership, inspiring women across the continent.
As she assumes office, expectations are high for her administration to drive economic stability, strengthen diplomatic ties, and continue Namibia’s legacy of peace and development.
