New Jersey Celebrates Muslim Heritage Month, Recognizes Pakistani-American Activists

The US state of New Jersey commemorated Muslim Heritage Month with a grand ceremony at the Statehouse in Trenton, honoring the contributions of Muslim-Americans to the state’s cultural, social, and civic landscape.

The event brought together lawmakers, community leaders, and activists to celebrate diversity, interfaith dialogue, and education. With approximately 320,000 Muslims—making up 3.5% of New Jersey’s population—the state has one of the largest Muslim communities in the country.

Pakistani-American Activists Honored

During the ceremony, Assemblywoman Shama Haider honored two Pakistani-American community leaders, Hannan Arshad and Rizwan Ali, for their dedication to civic engagement and interfaith initiatives.

✔ Hannan Arshad, a Rutgers University graduate pursuing a Master’s in Healthcare Administration at New York University, was recognized for his active participation in interfaith programs, community service, and leadership in the New Jersey Pakistan Day Parade.

✔ Rizwan Ali, Religious Chairman of Darul Islah Mosque and Community Center in Teaneck, New Jersey, was acknowledged for his role in organizing interfaith events and fostering cross-community dialogue. He also played a key role in Teaneck’s Muslim Heritage Month celebrations and is the author of MetalGhost, a novel featuring a Muslim superhero.

A Growing Tradition of Cultural Recognition

Now in its second year, Muslim Heritage Month in New Jersey continues to serve as an important platform for cultural recognition, showcasing the contributions of Muslim Americans in various fields while promoting unity and understanding.

Meanwhile, the Consulate General of Pakistan in New York reaffirmed its commitment to supporting initiatives that uplift Pakistani and Muslim communities in New Jersey and other states under its jurisdiction.

This celebration highlights the growing influence of Pakistani-Americans in civic, religious, and cultural spheres, reflecting their deep-rooted commitment to community service and interfaith harmony in the United States.
