North Korea declared on Sunday that its front-line army units are ready to execute strikes against South Korea. This announcement follows accusations that South Korean drones have infiltrated North Korean airspace and dropped propaganda leaflets over the capital, Pyongyang.
The North’s Defense Ministry issued a statement asserting that a preliminary operation order has been dispatched to artillery and other military units stationed near the border. These forces have been directed to be “fully ready to open fire” in response to any further drone incursions by South Korea.
While South Korea has refrained from confirming the deployment of drones, it has firmly warned that any threats to the safety of its citizens would prompt a strong response. The tensions were further fueled after North Korea accused its southern neighbor of conducting drone operations on three separate occasions this month, leading to threats of retaliation if such actions continue.
An unnamed spokesperson from North Korea’s military noted that relevant units have been instructed to prepare for potential immediate strikes on unspecified targets, indicating a heightened state of alert. This alarming development raises the stakes on the Korean Peninsula, as the possibility of conflict looms amid increasing military provocations.
