Tel Aviv — More than 100,000 protesters flooded the streets of Tel Aviv on Saturday night, voicing strong opposition to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s new Gaza war strategy and urging an immediate ceasefire to secure the release of remaining hostages.
The mass rally came just a day after Netanyahu’s office confirmed the security cabinet had approved plans to seize Gaza City, expanding Israel’s nearly two-year military campaign in the war-torn Palestinian territory. The move faces widespread public backlash and warnings from Israeli military officials that such action could endanger the hostages still held by Hamas.
“This isn’t just a military decision — it could be a death sentence for the people we love,” said Lishay Miran Lavi, wife of hostage Omri Miran, appealing directly to U.S. President Donald Trump to intervene and end the war.
Polls indicate an overwhelming majority of Israelis support halting the war to secure the release of the estimated 50 remaining hostages, with around 20 believed to still be alive. Most of those freed so far were released through diplomatic negotiations rather than military operations.
The latest demonstration saw participants waving Israeli flags, holding placards with hostage images, and carrying banners calling for Trump’s intervention. Some protesters also displayed images of Palestinian children killed during the conflict, underscoring growing concerns over the humanitarian toll.
Israel’s announcement to escalate military operations has drawn sharp criticism from opposition figures, human rights groups, and even some of its closest European allies. Far-right members of Netanyahu’s coalition have pushed for a full takeover of Gaza, while the military has cautioned against such plans.
